When I Grow Up

Life and Art – the Circle of Life?

Ironically enough, after the last post, I came across a similar sentiment in the book I was reading (one of the benefits to running the Mom Taxi is getting to read while waiting – in recent years, I have even gotten to read “grown up” novels). In the book, Busy Woman Seeks Wife, by Annie Sanders, one of the characters is talking about going back to work, looking for “A job, but one I can do and look after the children … I want to be here for them or what’s the point?” The reply: “Yeah, jobs. They’re not all they are cracked up to be.” Wow – that pretty much sums things up for me.

So, at this time, most traditional full time jobs are not likely to work for me. (After all, the Mom Taxi is still very much in demand.) Perhaps a skills analysis is needed. I know that it has been done before: listing the jobs a stay-at-home mom does and assigning a salary value to them (which only the top 1 percent are likely to be able to afford). I also know that the amount is a bit inflated, because none of us are doing all of those jobs all the time. But then again, who in their right mind would want to take on such a variety of jobs with such a variable schedule?

Refocus: Job Skills.

Well, there’s the obvious: Child Care (which is actually more complicated than it may seem, since there are varying levels and types of care required depending on the age and abilities of the child involved). Here I am talking about basic care: feeding, keeping clean and safe (again – very different by age).

Education: children learn quite a bit before entering school and it is accepted as fact that those who have support with homework do better in school. Religious education is also primarily the responsibility of parents. Social skills are learned at home, as are basic civic responsibilities.

Educational Support: Going to parent/teacher conferences, IEP meetings, home & school meetings; volunteering to help in classrooms or making dozens of muffins, donuts, cookies; researching family history to help with project, searching for photos for project; planning events for the school community; finding ways to fund things not included in school budget; sending press releases to the local paper to highlight school events; organizing and running the school store; putting together school yearbooks; planning party for “graduating” class; helping to plan/execute big events for specific school groups (e.g. marching band, theatre); collecting/sewing costumes for plays; and more.

Household Management: Keeping track of schedules, making appointments (doctors, dentists, vet, etc.), arranging for transportation, getting groceries, planning meals, keeping track of appliance/car maintenance, helping to find stuff.

Laundry (I hate, hate, hate folding socks!) & Dishes (I don’t usually mind this; I can watch the birds in the backyard birdbath from the sink.)

General Housekeeping (Some people like to clean, I am not one of them. I do however, take joy in being able to see the difference after it has been done.)

Financial Management: Pretty basic – manage a checkbook and pay bills. The worst part of this is when it requires spending untold hours on the phone pushing “1” and screaming “Give me a human being!” when mistakes have been made (usually because of the company’s reliance on computers).

Mom Taxi: Everyone knows what this is. Some days are busier than others.

Then there are the “extras.” Scouting and sports are big ones in our household. With four kids, it was inevitable that I would be a coach of some sort (I left the basketball completely to my husband, but we both coached in the baseball league for a time; I also took on a few years of soccer). Scouting has become my main volunteer focus in recent years. I was not a scout as a girl, but am thoroughly enjoying my time as a leader, and have learned much from the experience. Spending time with the Boy Scouts has also been rewarding. My Girl Scout resume now includes leader, registrar, product sales manager, co-service unit manager, trainer, and event coordinator. Surely some of these translate to valuable job skills.

Experts advise you to figure out what you love to do and find a way to make money doing it. That sounds pretty basic, but there is so much that I love to do. Starting with the everyday list:

Child care – love and hate, depending on specific chore, child’s attitude and my patience level (this last is often completely dependent on how recently they have been conducting sleep deprivation experiments on me)

Education – love, but it can get monotonous sometimes

Educational support – mostly love, but think maybe “been there, done that”

Household Management – neutral, it’s just something I do and am usually pretty good at

Laundry & Dishes – really?

General Housekeeping – uh, no.

Financial Management – again, neutral. I did work as a bookkeeper for a few months before having kids (I guess I forgot that in my earlier list). I enjoyed it for the most part – it is satisfying to know you have the answer right.

Mom Taxi – okay, but hate traffic.

“extras” – love it (obviously, that’s why I do it)

This exercise seems only moderately useful. More analysis is needed.

Unfortunately, this week looks like life might get in the way again. Looks like this can be a very long process…


Weighing the Options

As I have been repeatedly been told, the options are endless. I can be anything I want to be. So, what do I want to be?

I guess going back to school is one option. I can reconsider Law School, get a teacher’s certificate or Masters in Education or (theoretically, at least) reconsider veterinary school. The last one is out; there is too much undergrad work needed to make it a realistic possibility and the cost involved would have me working into old age just to break even. Law School is possible, but the same issues that originally caused me to toss that idea still exist. The education idea still has possibilities, though I decided (after much consideration) that I don’t want to teach high school (which would be my only option with the certificate program), and I can’t bring myself to take on the expense of the Masters right now with little to no guarantee of having a job after graduation (plus, I would have to take a math class before even applying to a program – they all seem to require two college math classes now; I only took one).

Okay, so no school for right now. Other options: retail – nice because you can leave it at work; flexible hours, but maybe a hassle because of the hours, especially at holidays; good because you move around and get exercise, uh, this body isn’t used to all that exercise (ouch!). Wait staff- mostly the same as retail, money can be slightly better. Office staff – nice because you don’t have to be on your feet, yet again not, because you sit all day.  Publishing – sounds good, but (except for local papers) would require lengthy commute. With the way the world has changed in the past 20+ years, I am likely looking at entry level, which may not pay enough to make it worthwhile.

Working from home: Find a non-scam work-at-home option (how do you do that?) Start my own business (pick only one idea?)

Revisiting the past might give me options:

Veterinary staff (loved the job, didn’t like working nights and weekends.) There are not many openings for these jobs, day or night staff.

Stall cleaner – not in the pay scale I am considering. I also would like to dress up occasionally.

Selling Rainbows (these were vacuums, but may as well have been the colorful things in the sky).

Waitress (see above concerns)

Cashier for Macy’s, Gift Shop, Shop Rite (ditto)

Tupperware Consultant (might have earned enough to cover the cost of gas, but I have a full cabinet of Tupperware products)

Data entry (worked with very nice people, but job itself was dreadfully dull)

Theme Reader – another job I loved, but to do it right, I spent too much time to make the pay worthwhile.

Assistant Editor – loved the job, hated that I had no time because of the “must-dos” in my time off.

Right about now, I am thinking that working is extremely overrated.


In the Beginning …

Sunrise from Cadillac Mountain, Acadia NPWe have all been asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” starting at a young age. I am sure I had a variety of standard answers when I was very young. I remember wanting to be an astronaut (the first woman in space), the president (the first woman president, see a trend here?) and was encouraged to reach for the stars by my family, especially my uncle who kept me supplied with books depicting girls who could do anything. I secretly had a desire to be like him, and write books that would be in libraries everywhere (I wrote many “books” on index cards stapled together in my early grades) but that seemed too remote a possibility to be real. Likewise my thoughts of becoming a Broadway actress (unrevealed until just this moment) which was even less likely considering the clinical shyness I experienced as a child. Starting around age 7 or 8, I focused on becoming a veterinarian. I went so far as to write to every college and university with a veterinary program (all 22 of them) to ask what I needed to do to reach this goal. This goal stuck with me until I was an 18 year old college student and faced my first life crisis.

When I started college, I started to contemplate life afterwards (remember, I was a very serious child). I considered where I wanted to be, and realized that, though I had dedicated a lot of time and resources to my grand plan, it didn’t really work anymore. I realized that (despite spending years swearing I NEVER wanted to have kids) that a family was something I wanted and was more important in fact than any career I might have. Knowing that when I commit to something, I really commit (and sometimes should be committed), I decided to abandon my major (since I had no true interest in science beyond it being a means to an end). That precipitated my first life crisis. NOW what was I going to do? After much consideration, consultation with family and friends, and a conversation with my very patient faculty adviser, I decided on a path to try and eventually found one that worked for me.

After spending much more time on sending resumes and going on interviews than I had anticipated, I landed at a magazine publisher. I started literally in the mail room and worked my way up to assistant editor on a start-up computer trade journal. We were cutting edge, we wrote about the latest and greatest in the computer world. I loved my job, but loved the family more and left for the glamorous world of a stay-at-home Mom.

Now, I am approaching middle age (fifty is looming), my days mothering are numbered and I am facing the crisis again – What do I do NOW?

I have publishing experience. BUT … that was when the internet was in its infancy – only a select few in our company had access. The rest of us had dumb terminals and proprietary email systems that only worked in house and at our satellite offices out of state (we were cutting edge remember?) The world of technology has grown so much, so fast that I have become, GASP, a dinosaur!

I have kept up with the times (sort of). I now write on the computer (my co-workers laughed at me then, since I hand wrote, then typed most of my articles), use Facebook regularly, and can navigate most websites easily.

I recently found a job that sounded perfect – writing and editing from a home office. Then I looked closer – they also wanted someone proficient in SEO, Google Analytics, and HTML. So, I dutifully looked these up (I knew about HTML, just haven’t done anything with it myself) and it appears that these are things I could learn easily and quickly enough. But how to convince them that I can do this? I felt as helpless as the months after graduating college – how do you get the experience to get the job if no one will give you the job without the experience?

Finally, one problem that I have an answer for. Something age and experience has taught me! Volunteering has its benefits. I can teach myself how to do all of this (the magical web makes these things easy to learn). I know that you need to use these skills regularly in order to not lose them. I am very active with Girl Scouts locally and have been thinking that we could use a website …
